Pan y Circo. Art and Food
On July 4th, the collective exhibition ‘Pan y circo’ will open at the Centro de Cultura Antiguo Instituto, curated by Alicia Ventura Bordes, in which I am participating
Food is one of the most important challenges for a sustainable future. In our current era, besides the concern of obtaining food, we must deal with choosing food, a complex and confusing issue dominated by advertising and the media. We oscillate between malnutrition due to a lack of food and overnutrition promoted by the industry. Between the quest for a healthy life and giving free rein to our desires and anxieties. All of this creates an altered state, a disoriented diner, and serious health and environmental problems. Beyond the purely nutritional aspect, we find answers to this imbalance in the acceleration of today’s society, its lifestyle, or the informational chaos that predominates in such a relevant issue as food.
This exhibition project reflects globally on the issue of food. Many topics are interwoven in eating and food, making it a subject that must be approached in a multidisciplinary way. ‘Bread and Circuses’ addresses the issue of food from several different perspectives: food and health; food and body standards; the aesthetics of taste; the excesses of the food industry; advertising, media, and food; and the finite earth. Moreover, food is a complex matter in which the involved facts intertwine and overlap.
